Engineer-led solar design

Most solar in Ghana is sold, not engineered.

A panel count is not a design. We start with your actual load profile, size the array, inverter and battery against it, design the protection and earthing, then commission and verify performance. The equipment is the last decision, not the first.

The Problem

Unreliable power is an engineering problem, not a shopping problem

Ghana enjoys roughly 5.0–5.5 peak sun hours a day — among the better solar resources in the world. The constraint has never been sunlight. It is that most installations are specified by whoever is selling the panels, then fail quietly: batteries that die in two years, inverters that trip under motor starting, arrays that clip at midday.

Diesel standby costs run continuously and scale with fuel price. A correctly designed solar-plus-storage system displaces that cost — but only if it is sized against the load it actually has to carry.

  • 01

    Load profiling first

We measure or reconstruct your real demand curve — base load, peaks, motor starting, duty cycles — before any equipment is discussed.

  • 02

    Architecture before brand

Grid-tie, hybrid, or off-grid is an engineering decision driven by your tariff, outage pattern and criticality. Not by what is in stock.

  • 03

    Protection designed, not assumed

DC and AC isolation, overcurrent coordination, surge protection and earthing to a defined standard — the part cheap installs skip.

  • 04

    Verified on handover

Commissioning data, string I-V readings and a performance baseline you can hold the system against in year three.

Consulting Services

Engineering first, equipment second

You can engage us for the design alone and buy equipment anywhere. Most clients ask us to supply as well — but the advice is not conditional on the sale.

Energy Audit & Load Profiling

Before anything is sized, we establish what you actually consume — and when. Data logging where possible, reconstruction from tariff records where not.

  • Interval metering and demand curve capture
  • Motor starting and inrush characterisation
  • Critical vs deferrable load segregation
  • Diesel displacement and payback modelling

System Design & Sizing

Array, inverter, battery and balance-of-system sized against the measured profile — with the calculations shown, not hidden.

  • PV array sizing with derating and soiling factors
  • String voltage checks across temperature extremes
  • Battery capacity, DoD, C-rate and chemistry selection
  • Single-line diagrams and cable schedules

Protection & Compliance Design

The part that separates a system that lasts from one that burns. Designed to standard, documented, and inspectable.

  • DC/AC isolation and overcurrent coordination
  • Surge protection (SPD) selection and placement
  • Earthing, bonding and lightning risk assessment
  • Arc-fault and rapid-shutdown considerations

Equipment Supply

Once the design is fixed, we source the specified equipment from the United States and land it duty paid.

  • Tier-1 panels, inverters and LiFePO₄ storage
  • Genuine goods with transferable warranty
  • Favourable duty treatment on qualifying components
  • Landed cost itemised before you commit

Commissioning & Verification

A system is not finished when it is installed. It is finished when it is proven.

  • String I-V curve tracing and insulation testing
  • Inverter parameter verification and grid settings
  • Battery capacity test and BMS configuration check
  • Performance baseline and handover documentation

O&M & Performance Review

Systems degrade. Batteries age. Someone should be watching the numbers against the baseline.

  • Annual performance ratio review
  • Battery state-of-health tracking
  • Thermographic inspection of DC and AC terminations
  • Cleaning schedule tuned to Harmattan soiling
Our Method

Six steps, in this order

Reversing this order is why systems fail.

01

Establish the load

Measure or reconstruct the demand curve. Separate critical from deferrable. Characterise motor starting.

02

Set the objective

Full off-grid? Outage ride-through? Diesel displacement? Tariff arbitrage? Each drives a different architecture.

03

Size the system

Array against irradiance and losses. Inverter against peak and surge. Battery against autonomy and depth of discharge.

04

Design the protection

Isolation, overcurrent, surge, earthing. String voltage verified at record low and high temperature.

05

Specify and procure

Now — and only now — equipment is selected. Landed cost modelled before purchase.

06

Commission and prove

Test, record, hand over a baseline. You should be able to audit the system in year five.

Sizing Tool

Indicative system sizing

A first-pass estimate using standard sizing methodology and Ghana irradiance. This is a starting point for a conversation — not a design. A real design requires your measured load profile.

Your requirement

Adjust any value — results update live

Derate accounts for temperature, soiling, wiring, mismatch and inverter efficiency. Ghana rooftops run hot — 0.80 is a realistic default, not a conservative one.

Standards & Compliance

What we design to

Ghanaian regulatory requirements and the international standards our designs reference. We confirm current requirements with the relevant authority on every project — regulations change.

InstrumentBodyWhat it governs
Renewable Energy Act, 2011 (Act 832)Energy Commission of GhanaThe primary legal framework for renewable energy in Ghana — licensing, feed-in arrangements, and the general regulatory regime for renewable generation.
Energy Commission licensing & certificationEnergy Commission of GhanaLicensing of solar installers, contractors and technicians. Confirm the current certification class required for your project scale before appointing an installer.
Grid connection & net meteringECG / NEDCo / Energy CommissionRequirements for connecting a grid-tied or hybrid system to the distribution network, including any net-metering application process and technical conditions.
Ghana Standards Authority conformityGhana Standards Authority (GSA)Conformity assessment and standards marking for imported electrical equipment. Confirm which components in your bill of materials are regulated before shipping.
Hazardous & Electronic Waste Act, 2016 (Act 917)EPA GhanaControls on electrical and electronic equipment, including end-of-life obligations and any applicable eco-levy on imported EEE. Relevant to batteries and electronics.
IEC 62548International (IEC)Design requirements for photovoltaic arrays — string configuration, voltage limits, protection and isolation on the DC side.
IEC 62446International (IEC)Commissioning tests, documentation and periodic inspection requirements for grid-connected PV systems. This is the basis of our handover pack.
IEC 61730 / IEC 61215International (IEC)PV module safety qualification and design/type approval. We specify modules certified to these standards — it is the practical filter against counterfeit product.
IEC 62109International (IEC)Safety of power converters for PV systems — the inverter safety standard.
IEC 62619 / UN 38.3InternationalSafety requirements for secondary lithium cells and batteries, and transport testing for lithium batteries. UN 38.3 matters directly for shipping.
IEC 62305International (IEC)Lightning protection — risk assessment and protection measures. Material in Ghana given storm activity.
NFPA 70 (NEC) Article 690/706United States (NFPA)Referenced for US-sourced equipment: PV system and energy storage installation requirements, rapid shutdown and DC arc-fault protection.
IEEE 1547IEEEInterconnection and interoperability of distributed energy resources with the grid — anti-islanding and grid support behaviour.
This table is a working reference, not legal advice. Ghanaian energy and import regulations are revised regularly — including duty and levy treatment of solar components. We verify current requirements with the Energy Commission, GSA and GRA on every project before committing to a bill of materials or a landed cost.
